Our ‘Leading Lady of Lancashire'

Our ‘Leading Lady of Lancashire'

Butlers are a family business whose family values are the bedrock of our culture. As a third generation cheesemaker, I lead the team to hand make cheeses that are top quality, delicious and truly British. Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses was started in 1932 by my grandparents, Richard and Annie Butler - they bought the farm in rural Lancashire at the foot of Beacon Fell. Our farmhouse Lancashire recipe was created by my Mum, Jean Butler and remains our flagship cheese! As well as using classic recipes, we are constantly innovating to feed the need of our customers who enjoy exploring new flavours.

What’s your best piece of business advice? / OR the best piece of business advice you have been given?

My Dad, Tom Butler said, “It’s your quality that has got you where you are today and it’s your quality that will keep you there.” Innovation is at the heart of our work, whilst keeping our authenticity.

What do you love about your job?

What’s there to not love about eating delicious cheese every day? We work together innovating new ideas whilst keeping our traditional recipes at the heart of every cheese. At Easter, we launched Blacksticks Blue Easter Egg AKA The Cheester Egg - a blend of Blacksticks Blue Cheese and soft cheese which is delicious spread on a hot cross bun!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I can devour a whole log of our Kidderton Ash soft goats cheese - it’s delicious, distinct, delicate and made with pasteurised milk from our family herd.
