We plan for generations, not budget cycles

Daniel Hall joined BBC Breakfast to discuss the impact of the Budget and why rural family businesses like Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses need certainty to invest and grow.

Our message was simple: rural businesses plan for the long term and therefore need the right conditions in place to keep doing what they do best.

For us, that is making quality British farmhouse cheese, supporting our localcommunity and investing for the future. As Daniel put it on BBC Breakfast, "we plan for generations, not Budget cycles.”

Daniel highlighted what he felt was missing from the Budget – recognition of the rural economy, the contribution of family businesses and the importance of British food production in strengthening our food security.

There is no better example of our long-term thinking than our fire rebuild. We didn’t just replace what we’d lost; we invested in our new cheese campus at the dairy to protect our craft and embrace new technologies that enable us to be aresilient, sustainable business for generations to come.

Daniel also used the BBC Breakfast opportunity to highlight the value of the rural economy. Behind every product, whether it’s cheese, meat or fish, are farmers, suppliers and skilled people, many of them rooted in local communities.

Businesses like ours provide meaningful, skilled employment, support local economies, sustain communities and help maintain Britain's ability to produce its own food to the highest standards. That contribution to national economic resilience should not be underestimated by government decision-makers.

Britain produces more than 700 varieties of cheese, and there is a real opportunity for retailers to play a role as well, by putting British products front and centre in their procurement decisions. Supporting British production means more jobs, more investment and more value staying in the UK economy.

Greater recognition of the rural economy and a stronger focus on food security are the long-term changes needed to make a real difference.
